Misty Copeland is a 36-year-old American dancer and ballerina who became the first African-American prima ballerina of the American Ballet theatre. At age 13 she was not accepted into a dance school. And in 33 years she became the first prima ballerina of the American ballet theater. Her story is a classic example of when a person is stronger than circumstances. When the impossible is possible.

From an early age, Misty was fond of dancing, but the ballet school felt that at age 13 it was too late to start, and her physique “not for ballet.” And despite this, after receiving a scholarship to study at the dance school, Copeland in 15 years wins a prestigious dance competition. She was admired, but also clearly hinted that the color of her skin can be a severe obstacle to success.

Also, as a result of puberty Misty Copeland’s body began to go beyond the ballet parameters: broad shoulders, big boobs, athletic body. And she was offered a “stretch out.” But “stretch out” with this physique was difficult, because to change the physique, which is inherent, and it is not under force.

For Misty Copeland all this didn’t matter, even after three years of desperate attempts to lose weight, she continued to train hard and perform. When she moved to New York at the age of 17, she felt like an outsider in a troupe of 80 people, where she stood out from the rest. Directors didn’t know what to do with “atypical ballerina.” Therefore, she gradually began to transfer in the solo party. Real success and breakthrough in her career was the ballet “Firebird,” then was touring, her career went up rapidly, speak about it as about the unique ballerina who revolutionized ballet.

Then, there was a heavy leg surgery, which could be the end of Misty Copeland’s career, as at that time she was already 29 years old, and fall out of the schedule for seven months – a chance to going into oblivion. And yet, her return to the stage was genuinely triumphant – a period of recovery during which she could not perform some elements for a long time, including jumping, was relatively fast and she was offered the role of Odette/Odile in “Swan Lake.” Misty Copeland was the world’s first African-American ballerina to perform the role.
