Whatever its other failings are, “Barbie” very clearly promotes compassion for men, which is something we should be happy to see in the biggest feminist box office hit of all time. Feminism isn’t going anywhere, and men need to get realistic and realize that a compassionate “Barbie” feminism is preferable to the feminism of “Somebody I Used to Know”, a film that tells women to be compassionate for other women to the EXCLUSION of men. According to that film, men are to be pitilessly discarded by self-respecting women unless men are willing to be betas. That kind of thinking is far more threatening to us than any of the run of the mill vanilla feminism in “Barbie.”
