deutschland uber alles sounds chauvinistic these days but back in 5th century the whole western mediterranean was german. the franks and burgundians in france – even today france is known as frankreich in german, or frankrijk in dutch, and francia in spanish and italian. the vandals and then the suebis and visigoth in spain. the longobardi (lombards) and ostrogoth in italy. the vandals in north africa. the saxons and angles in britain – it’s amazing how such a significant tribe lent its name to one of the greatest nation of wankers, england, and to one of the most understood and spoken language, english.
a couple of generations before that it was practically better to be a slave than be a german in roman empire. a slave could work his ass off to free hisself, climb the social ladder, and hope one day to sit on the throne. since julius caesar recruited a band of german horsemen for his personal bodyguards in gallic campaigns, the roman battles were increasingly fought by allied germanic tribes, but whatever there achievements, a german could never be emperor. stilicho and aetius (ezio) are the good examples.
