MIME type error

I've noticed a few posts with this video player error recently:

I was wondering if it's due to file deletion or a separate issue?
I can re-up or replace mine and might have saved other people's, but didn't want to re-post anything that might have been removed on purpose. Opening the attachments in a new tab gives a 404 error.

A couple of examples:

If it helps, I'd have a similar thing happen on my old forum (also XenForo), when I'd delete attachments directly via the admin panel, but forgot to delete the post in the thread. It didn't mention mime-type though, just something like 'file not found'.

Something with the blog hasn't updated to the recent HTML5 for video. Java can be disabled to browsers with a VPN or onion. This might work again if you use a different browser, VPN depending on which one you use or this blog updates to the latest HTML5 version.
Until then, we are stuck it.

Does everyone not see the videos in the 2 links @sausages posted?

They both redirect to 404 when loaded from their source. This, imo, suggests that the files are no longer there. As far as I understand it, you will get that error on the embedded video if there is a decoding error, but the fact that there's a 404 tells us that there are no files anymore for the player to decode.

I've looked at some of mine that have the same and when I right click and save, I can now no longer download the original file? I guess no one else can???

I've also read somewhere that it could be HEVC codec for Windows 10 and 11, that you now have to purchase from the Microsoft store for 79p. Used to be free, but they are currently breaking up Google so I guess they are milking it while they can?

@crapper can you please configure the site to receive H.264 files to sort out this problem?

There are loads of files that are being deleted or cannot be seen at all.

1. Server Configuration Issues:
  • Incorrect MIME Type Assignment:
The server might not be correctly associating the file extension with the appropriate MIME type. For example, a .mp4 video file might be incorrectly identified as a different type, preventing the browser from playing it.
  • Server Misconfiguration:
The server might be missing or incorrectly configured MIME type directives, preventing it from sending the correct information to the browser.

2. Browser-Related Issues:
  • Unsupported MIME Type: The browser might not support the MIME type the server is sending. For example, older browsers might not support certain video codecs or formats.

  • Cache or Cookies: Corrupted browser cache or cookies can sometimes interfere with media playback, causing the error message to appear.

  • Plugins or Extensions: Conflicts with browser plugins or extensions could also be a factor.

3. File-Related Issues:
  • Incompatible File Format: The video file itself might be in a format that the browser doesn't natively support, or it might require specific codecs that are not installed or enabled.

Troubleshooting Steps:
  1. Check File Extension and MIME Type: Ensure the file extension (.mp4, .avi, etc.) matches the file's content and that the server is correctly identifying the file's MIME type. You can use online tools like MIME Type Checker to check the file's MIME type.

  2. Verify Server Configuration: If you have access to the server's configuration files (like .htaccess), check for any MIME type directives and ensure they are correct and up-to-date.

  3. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies: Clear your browser's cache and cookies to see if that resolves the issue.

  4. Update Browser: Ensure you're using the latest version of your web browser.

  5. Try a Different Browser: Test the file in a different browser to see if the issue is specific to one browser.

  6. Install Necessary Codecs: If the browser is missing codecs for a specific video format, you might need to install them.

  7. Use a Dedicated Video Player: Try opening the file with a dedicated video player like VLC, which often supports a wider range of formats and codecs.

  8. Check for Server-Side Issues: If you're still having problems, contact the forum administrator or server administrator to report the issue and see if they can identify and resolve any server-side problems.

This video is confirmed to be encoded with H.264. I have verified with ffprobe before uploading.
Depending on the result of the upload, I will edit this post with more information, and hopefully we can move past encoding and MIME type errors concern.

*edit*
As we can see, the video is playable, and it was not automatically deleted.
The videos in question are getting back a 404 status code, that means that the files do not exist.
We know that the server isn't deleting H.264 videos automatically, and what typically happens when a unsupported file is uploaded, it either doesn't complete the upload process. You should still be able to download these videos, but if it 404s then it's simply not there. No amount of configuring the forum or troubleshooting MIME types is going to change this.

You can use to check the status of a URL. One of the broken videos mentioned in this thread is

and the url to the video that I uploaded is

You can check both of them at the same time. Mine gives a 200 status code, which means OK.

The issue is not encoding. This issue is not H.264 encoding. I don't know why the videos are getting deleted, but that is actually the problem.

This is what I assumed, I think the mime type error is shown by default.
I was curious because people can reupload their own videos if they need to, but if there was a specific reason they've been removed (like DMCA), then they'll get taken down again.

Thinking outside of the box (I hate people who say that), as long as those posts were dealt with correctly, and we're unaware they received a takedown notice, we can re-upload and plead ignorance.
This also gives mods plausible deniability because they didn't know (if nobody tells them ;)).
If another takedown gets submitted and the attachment disappears, then it's safe to assume it's best not to post again.

We'll keep this a "secret"shushing-face.pngso that all parties are in the dark, and can plead the 5th if/when copyright claims turn up.

This message will self-destruct.

Just keep posting them, each post requires a separate dmca takedown request and as we don’t post the reason when we remove them, you have all the ignorance you’ll ever need:p

I can't even post a video anymore, says it needs administrators permission. And my ''is this blog run by Police now'' comment was deleted. Is this site set up to hack people now? Never used to be like this.
Why can't I post because of your new View the User methods?

Right so it's my Anti-Ransomewear software stopping me from uploading.

Be aware of this everyone.
