The story drew criticism from Black staff members at the title, with one contacting magazine executives saying, “the story insensitively endorsed an instance of cultural appropriation.” According to the NYT story, one employee explained by email why some people had reacted negatively, writing, “If Kendall wants to do something stupid fine, but our writers (especially white ones) don’t need to weight in and glorify it or ascribe reasons to it that read culturally insensitive.”
